Yep. Permission as in "access", rather then "I'm allowed". Sorry if that was confusing

When it comes to using the site within it's current set up, I have as much access as I can, but when it comes to anything that could conceivably derail the site completely or cause permanent damage, only server techs have permission to do so. Site upgrades, database access, new software installation, etc., is out of my ability to do on my own

So translating into plain language, the server techs are either overworked and don't have the time AND/OR management is not going to allow the changes to be applied because they don't want to pay for the overtime if it breaks something.

This is part of the reason I've stepped away. Another is when I find articles such as this.

Exclusive: Hundreds of forums hacked, leaking millions of users' data

"Despite a push in recent years for stronger encryption and fixing security flaws, the forums thought to be affected by the breach fell far behind industry security norms.
A cursory search of the list of domains caught up in the hack revealed that none of the sites we checked offered basic HTTPS website encryption, which would prevent usernames and passwords from being intercepted.
Many of the forums ran versions of vBulletin software dating back to 2007. Most were running software versions that were easily exploitable by hackers with known vulnerabilities. Ablog post from security reporter Brian Krebs from 2013 showed that older versions of the vBulletin forums that were vulnerable could be easily searched with readily-available attack tools."

    And this:

Thousands of Sites Hacked Via vBulletin Hole — Krebs on Security

So the real question is VS going to get serious about protecting our personal information or is management going to keep blowing us off? I would like an honest answer please.

It appears the *techs* assigned to sites like our's are low level peons capable of not much more than being a mouthpiece of Vertical Scope and the higher ups couldn't care less. Ball punted. Pathetic. morphius7777morphius7777

We're very serious about protecting information. That "leak" 2 years ago caused us to step up a lot of security measures we have on the site, and is part of the reason my hands are tied when it comes to doing certain software updates to the site. I don't have the access, because they restrict the access to make things safer.

That breach didn't effect this site, so it wasn't posted up about here. Only sites with a certain VBulletin software plugin, developed by a 3rd party I'm not allowed to name, were effected. Our servers/databases weren't actually compromised themselves, that 3rd party plugin was. There were a lot of sites that were effected, but we made the news as we are by far the largest single entity effected by that breach. (for the record, if I get any of these details a little wrong or fuzzy, sorry. It was 2 years ago after all.)

I mean... kinda? I don't much like being called a peon (zug zug) but my role here is to act as a go between. We have a lot of sites, and the techs we have with the skills needed to do the biggest tasks have their time very much dictated to them.

Call it even then. I don't very much appreciate watching our site drop behind on being a security risk due to not keeping it updated to its most current form, top to bottom, all aspects. I have both a financial investment as well as a decades long membership here, and I have no interest in seeing it become abandonware.

So what's the plan for this site AdminVSAdminVS ? I ask because it appears user posts are down, we can't upgrade/update for whatever reason and long-time posters seem to be leaving.

I wouldn't call it even. I'm pretty sure I'm still in the hole with you guys for more actual development.

Heard back on this. Apparently, the reason the upgrade hasn't been forthcoming is that they are holding off on a bigger upgrade. We're looking into going to Xenforo 2 (we being on Xenforo 1).

I'm sure it won't surprise you when I say I don't have a timeline on this being rolled out. Currently, they are still testing in a developmental environment before they take it live on a trial site.

I was however able to make the case for the Media Gallery getting some attention in the mean time. We'll see.

Does anyone have a recent example of a the media gallery misbehaving? Would be helpful for making the case to upgrade gallery before we just wait for Xenforo 2

Here is one example when a pictures just disappears but you see this in the first screen shot, then when you click on it you get the second screen shot and you can't deleted it since it isn't there anymore.

    Thanks.

Site migrations to Xenforo 2 are progressing well. We've had 4 live sites migrated to 2 with no issues that I'm aware of, so soon it should be time for mass deployment.

Meaning also I won't be getting the Gallery looked at soon. If we get stalled, I'll be able to use these examples though.

I'm still waiting for a response on the plan to get this site off life-support. Being that its been 2 weeks and nothing though, I guess life-support is what they want till the site finally dies.

Sad that the forum has turned into a wasteland, especially considering how many folks spent years building this place.

I may pop through to check on news for the Sport, but outside of that I'm done with this place. Low activity, a management group that doesn't give a crap and a hobby that is slowly dying. Sounds like a great recipe.
