    What a game

The New England Patriots overcame a 25-point deficit by scoring 31 unanswered points as the Patriots became the fourth team in Super Bowl history to win five titles. James White scored the winning touchdown in overtime — the first in Super Bowl history — as New England stunned the Falcons 34-28.

    Scoreless after one quarter

Defense was the name of the game early in Super Bowl LI. The Patriots were held to four first downs while the Falcons had just two in the quarter. Tom Brady was on target, going 6 of 8 for 68 yards. Matt Ryan completed both of his passes for 12 yards. Devonta Freeman had the biggest play of the quarter, running for 37 yards on the Falcons’ first play from scrimmage.

0-0 at end of first quarter.

Deion Jones fumble forced LeGarrette Blount

The first turnover of the game occurred early in the second quarter, when LeGarrette Blount had the ball stripped from him by linebacker Deion Jones. The turnover was recovered by the Falcons on the 29-yard line, giving them great field position and leading to the first score in the game minutes later.

0-0, 14:19 left in the second quarter.

Devonta Freeman gets the Falcons on the board

The Patriots had all kinds of trouble containing Freeman early in the game. After Julio Jones picked up the first 42 yards on the drive on two catches, Freeman finished the job, punching in the first score on this 5-yard run that he punctuated with his leap into the end zone.

7-0, Falcons, with 12:15 left in the second quarter.

Falcons quickly add to the lead

After holding the Patriots to a three-and-out, the Falcons put New England into a two-touchdown hole. Matt Ryan hit tight end Austin Hooper on a 19-yard pass for Atlanta’s second touchdown of the quarter. The TD capped a five-play, 62-yard drive that took only 1 minute, 49 seconds.

14-0, Falcons, with 8:48 left in the second quarter.

Robert Alford comes up with a backbreaking interception

The Patriots looked like they were going to answer heading into halftime. After the Falcons were flagged for three defensive-holding penalties that extended the drive, New England threatened to get on the scoreboard. Then Robert Alford stepped in front of a pass intended for Danny Amendoa, picking off Tom Brady and returning it 82 yards for a touchdown – the first pick-six against Brady in the Super Bowl.

21-0, Falcons, with 2:21 left in the second quarter.

Patriots finally get on the board

The Patriots regrouped after falling down by three touchdowns, but they could potentially could have had more. The Pats looked like they were going to punch it in the end zone after Tom Brady hit James White on a screen pass that he took the Falcons’ 3-yard-line, but a holding call on tight end Martellus Bennett pushed New England back 10 yards. The Patriots had to settle for a Stephen Gostkowski 41-yard field goal, cutting their deficit heading into halftime to 18 points.

21-3, Falcons, with 2 seconds left in the second quarter.

Tom Brady struggles in the first half

Brady was under pressure for most of the first half and it appeared to affect the Patriots quarterback. He completed 16 of 26 attempts and missed a couple of open receivers. Brady was hit 11 times in the first half and was sacked twice. His biggest mistake came in the lopsided second quarter, as Robert Alford jumped in front of a pass intended for Danny Amendola and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown.

    21-3, Falcons, halftime.

Falcons continue to pile it on

It’s looking less and less likely that the Patriots are going to make a comeback at this point. After forcing the Patriots to go three-and-out again, Matt Ryan capped an eight-play, 85-yard drive by hitting Tevin Coleman out of the backfield on a 6-yard touchdown to give the Falcons a 25-point lead. Ryan completed 12 of 14 attempts for 193 yards and two touchdowns at this point.

28-3, Falcons, with 8:36 left in the third quarter.

Patriots finally find the end zone

It’s been that kind of game for the Patriots, who have found a way to consistently shoot themselves in the foot in Super Bowl LI. Tom Brady capped a 13-play, 75-yard drive by hitting James White with a 5-yard touchdown, cutting New England’s deficit to 19 points. But Stephen Gostkowski botches the extra-point attempt, killing whatever momentum the Patriots built on the score.

Falcons, 28-9, with 2:06 left in the third.

Patriots have to settle for another field goal

The Patriots continue to have problems protecting Tom Brady. Despite driving the Falcons’ 7-yard line, New England again had to settle for three points instead of potentially seven due to its offensive line being overwhelmed by Atlanta’s pass rush. Brady was sacked twice by Grady Jarrett during the goal-line stand, forcing the Patriots to settle for three points. At this point in the game, Brady has been hit 14 times and sacked four times.

Falcons, 28-12, with 9:48 left in the fourth.

Falcons commit first turnover in the postseason

The Patriots finally build some momentum, forcing the Falcons to commit their first turnover in the playoffs. Matt Ryan dropped back on third-and-1 when he was hit by Don’t’a Hightower, knocking the ball loose from the newly crowned MVP. New England recovered at the Atlanta 25-yard line, setting up another score moments later.

Falcons, 28-12, with 8:31 left in the fourth.

Patriots are back in this one

This time, New England took full advantage of the great field position. Tom Brady capped a five-play, 25-yard drive that took only 2 minutes, 25 seconds, hitting Danny Amendola for a 6-yard touchdown. The Patriots cut the Falcons’ lead to one score after James White rushed up the middle for the two-point conversion.

Falcons, 28-20, with 5:56 left in the fourth.

Edelman makes an absolutely unreal catch

With the Patriots needing a touchdown and a two-point conversion to tie the score, Tom Brady hit Julian Edelman on a 25-yard pass that he juggled twice but eventually hauled in before it the ball touched the ground. The play was reviewed but the call on the field stood.

Falcons, 28-20, 2:28 left in the fourth.

    The Patriots complete the comeback

The Patriots come all the way back from down 21 points in the first quarter. James White scores on a 1-yard run and Tom Brady completes the comeback, hitting Danny Amendola for the two-point conversion to cap 25 unanswered points by the Patriots. The score forced the first overtime in Super Bowl history.

28-28, with 57 seconds left in the fourth.

The Patriots complete what looked like an impossible comeback

New England didn’t give the Falcons a chance to touch the ball in the overtime, driving 75 yards on eight plays in 3 minutes, 52 seconds. James White capped the unbelievable rally, rushing in from 2 yards. The Patriots came back from down 25 points, scoring 31 unanswered to win their record fifth Super Bowl title.

Patriots, 34-28, with 11:02 left in overtime.

Watching this team winning pisses me off, especially since they beat both of my teams asses this season. Oh well, its not like the Browns are gonna do anything...

Falcons.... I just don't know what to say! 3 defensive penalties late in 2nd quarter let Patriots keep the ball. Poor coaching in the last half the way I saw it. When you almost close enough to kick a field goal don't start passing the ball....

It doesn't get them the ring, but it is a nice feeling that the Seahawks beat both Superbowl teams and are the only team to beat the Patriots with Tom Brady playing this season.

I really do hope Atlanta gets a ring soon. Just not against the Patriots.

I doubt they will ever win a Super Bowl. With the exception of a Braves championship in 1995. This city has been cursed.

Packers fan here, was rooting for the Falcons because I loathe the Pats. The Falcons completely blew it with poor play calling. Great game to watch, but definitely not the outcome I was hoping for. Oh and I still think the OT rules suck, it should be like college.
