Default Gimme A Hall Yeah!

In perhaps what was a parting shot fired by a released WWE employee, someone at wwe.com posted the story on their website today announcing that "Stone Cold" Steve Austin would head up the WWE Hall of Fame 2009 Class of inductees. The story remained up for only a few minutes before being removed. It has been rumored that Austin would be inducted this year along with the Funks, Von Erichs, and Freebirds since Wrestle Mania 25 takes place in TX.

Didn't all the Von Erichs die?

The Von Erichs are the most tragic story in the history of the wrestling business. David Von Erich died while on a tour of Japan in 1984. Some say it was a drug overdose, others say it was due to intestinal entiritis. Mike Von Erich committed suicide in 1986 after battling toxic shock syndrome. Kerry Von Erich committed suicide in 1993 facing jail time for a parole violation after being arrested for drug possession. Finally the youngest Von Erich brother, Chris, committed suicide at the age of 21 depressed over his small physical stature while feeling the pressure of trying to follow in his brother's footsteps. The lone Von Erich survivor, Kevin, lives with his family in Hawaii. He sold the old World Class Championship Wrestling tape library to WWE last year. If you are a fan of the 1980s territory system in wrestling, especially WCCW based out of Dallas, I reccommend picking up an excellent documentary called "Heroes of World Class" and the WWE documentary "Thre Triumph and Tragedy of World Class Championship Wrestling". To say that promotion was cursed is an understatement as many of their marquee stars during their huge run in the mid 80s are no longer with us.

The Von Erichs were the prelude to all of the WWE deaths over the years. It is a tragedy I used to watch all of the WCCW matches back in the day!

To elaborate on the Kerry Von Erich story a little further, I thought it was very sad that after the tragic motorcycle accident where Kerry lost part of his foot, he lived in horror of losing his wrestling boot in a match, thus exposing the disability. I agree with the fact that the Von Erich story is sad, however, not all that much worse than the Stu Hart family story.

Pro wrestling has taken many odd turns in its history and now perhaps it is at a low point in the fact that Vince McMann has killed off most of his main competition and now the product seems very stale to me. How much longer will they be able to use the "Well Worn" story line of Mr. McMann coming to the ring to once again wrestle. Perhaps they should do a feature with Mr. McMann offering up a challenge to Rocky Balboa for just "ONE MORE ROUND" and the winner could be awarded the Metamucil award and become a "Regular" contributor.

They actually mention that on the Heroes of World Class DVD. He actually did lose the boot in a match against the Freebirds but it was not televised. It was a very well kept secret. I had no idea that he wrestled for years with a prosthetic foot until after his death.

It is a type of staph infection that is very rare in cases with male athletes. They actually mention on the DVD that there had been only 3 confirmed cases in male athletes at the time Mike got sick. His fever got so high that it caused permanent damage. It was sad to see him after his illness.
