I understand that we'll never really know who would have won any of the championships during the "Chase" years if there were no chase, but I would bet my entire diecast collection that there would have been no "5-time".

and with the same reason as you....I'd believe there could be a 6 time...they were that good. I would watch those guys go through tech in the peak of that run, they KNEW they were going to win races...albeit perhaps using some 'questionable' equipment, I don't care what point system you used, they were the dogs running laps around the yard. Karl I tell you with absoloute sincerity only because I know you are a sharp guy and have every reason to believe what you do...there isn't a point system created that would have stopped that train. The only thing that did, is their own fear of failure...the reason they didn't win the last one is because they felt pressure and changed everything...some of that to help the 88 crew improve (NOT saying the 88 took anything away, saying when the 88 move to the 48 shop, things changed. The crew that build and worked with the 24 crew worked with the 48...that changed) flat out, I'd bet my own diecast collection they'd have still won all five, probably had them each locked up with four or more to go, and probably would have won a couple more because they would have had so much more confidence. Keep in mind NASCAR kept changing the points, the tracks, the bonuses, the cars...they did everything they could without changing the sport top to bottom to produce a new winner...JJ like him or hate him is THE champion of this young generation of drivers.

There was absolutely no way team 48 was going to win that championship over team 24 in 2007. Jeff's 2007 season stands with his best seasons in his 90's prime. He did everything he needed to do all season long to win a championship. The consistency never faltered. He held the largest points lead after X amount of races in NASCAR history at one point in the season.

Once the Chase starts, all it took was Johnson to capture a better average finish. Gordon won 2 races with his worst finish being 11th at Dover.

here's the point that's being missed...the 48 didn't need the points lead at week 26...just at week 36..and they knew it. You nor I shall ever know what they held back or what coulda shoulda been different because the bottom line, when the checkers fell at Homestead, the 48 had the most dominant team and did what the rules told them to do in order to win a championship...I was with that team in Vegas in 07...seeing them go through tech, they were on top of the world to each and every man...I'm telling you it could be argued each and every way possible. The fact will always favor the name on the cup trophy..they did what was plain and simple required to win, the 24 failed. period end of story...if the 24 was the best they would have won when it counted. Kyle Busch the same could be said for him in what 08? BUT he didn't win it, the RULES established for that season were, the best car in the last ten races, of the 10-12ish...who led in points at that time...what gets you there is not the same as what won you a championship under the old rules. Sorry, I know you are biased toward Jeff by your screen name, and yes, wise beyond your years and peers, we've beaten that horse into alligator meat at the zoo...however, 48 wins by the rules they needed to win by...can't say they wouldn't couldn't didn't...they did.

He is either tied with Tony for most wins or he is second most wins at Watkins Glen. He had one of the dominate cars at Sonoma if it werent for running out of fuel. So one can say that he has a "good shot" at a victory there. He is the all time Nascar winner at Indy, finished 2nd there last year and another 5 laps likely would of won, so he has a "good shot" at a win there. He won Atlanta last year. Finished 6th at Michigan earlier this year. Won Pocono last year.

I think there is a really good chance for JG to get 2 wins before the Chase. He has dominate cars, just bad luck. I sure woudlnt count him out until the mathmeticians say it is impossible.

I am not going to lie and say I am not the type to say "i told you so". I absolutely am the type to say that, so here goes. Here we are 3 races after so many were saying Jeff was done, blah, blah, blah. Now, if the Chase started today, he would be in. And we havent even made it to statistically one of his best tracks..Watkins Glen.

Agreed. The thread was just a ramblings of a now banned member. It should've stayed dead. Officially closed.
