Default Hot Wheels color variations

I've noticed that most cars come in multiple color variations, are some more common/HTF than others or is this just a ploy to get collectors to buy more cars? For instance I've found the Corvette Grand Sport (2008 new model) in black, red, and blue.

hot wheels does repaints of cars. i've seen as many as 4 to 5 times a year. hard core collectors have to have them all. i can't afford, nor would i if i could buy them all. it was a trend mattel started , i noticed , alot, around 1998. i was buying more hot wheels then. i got up to around 800, with all different color variations, etc. and had 56 t.hunts. i sold that entire collection. since then i've only bought treasure hunts, about 135, and htf cars, all of which is also now for sale.
like the ones at k-mart days. i have a kmart a mile away. it's sept. 20th by the way (k-day). you might want to go. it's a sat. and starts at 9:00 a.m. at all k-marts. most everyone gets a treasure hunt if you get to open a case. the amount of cases a stores get varies. here usually gets 16, and usually have 15 or 16 people, so everyone gets a TH. at least for the last 2 years every case has a treasure hunt, and a few get lucky and get a super hunt. you never know what mattel will pull. also there are 3 special painted cars, only sold at k-mart, on k-day, in the 36 count cases. i've bought several of those special paint jobs since they are k-mart exclusives.. also got a really rare one. mattel stuck a yellow and black top cuda in on one k-day, and put 10 spoke wheels on a few of them instead of the 5 spoke on the rest. i lucked out and got a 10 spoke. only one there that got one.
wheel variations or cars on wrong cards with wrong cars, seem to be better variations to collect. buying repaints is to me just a marketing ploy that works on alot of obsessed collectors. will a repaint have extra value. 99 percent of the time no. but again, every once in awhile, mattel will shortprint or make a repaint with a wheel variation and make it rare. i haven't bought anything other than a treasure hunt since winter of 2007.

Just some FYI on the color variations for this year. All First editions for 2008 will be released in 3 color variations per release. I don't have a clue why they are doing this this year but I finally said this is the last year for me on the first editions. I've collected all the first editions since they started in 1995. It's starting to get like WC. Just too many over and over diecast too keep up with.
