Rebilas/US PresswireThe Giants have cut wide receiver Plaxico Burress after four seasons with the team. Plaxico Burress' legal situation might not be resolved, but his time with the Giants has reached an end. The Giants announced Friday afternoon that they have released the veteran wide receiver, who spent that past four seasons with the team. The status of Burress, 31, has been the subject of much conjecture since Nov. 29, when he was wounded in an accidental shooting in a Manhattan nightclub. He was inactive for the Giants' victory in Washington the following day, then placed on the reserve/non-football injury list for the remainder of the season. The team also fined Burress and suspended him for four games for conduct detrimental to the team. "I am an optimist, and I believe most situations can be worked out," general manager Jerry Reese said in a statement released by the team. "We hung in there as long as we could in hopes that there could be a resolution to this situation other than the decision we made today to release Plaxico. It wasn't to be, so now we have to move on. Like everybody else here, we want nothing but the best for Plaxico, and we are appreciative of the contributions he made to this franchise." Burress caught the game-winning touchdown pass in the Giants' victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII and was signed to a long-term contract hours before last year's season opener against the Redskins. In his four years with the Giants Burress caught 344 passes, which places him 12th on the franchise's career list, one catch ahead of Earnest Gray and three behind Aaron Thomas. Burress had 3,681 receiving yards and caught 33 touchdown passes for the Giants. "Plaxico's contribution to our championship season in 2007 can never be underestimated or undervalued," coach Tom Coughlin said in the team's release. "He displayed tremendous determination throughout that season. Having said that, I have always been as concerned about Plaxico as a man as I have been about him as a player, and my hope is that everything that has happened over the past several months represents a turning point. He is a young man with a family who has a whole lifetime ahead of him, and I personally wish him and his family well."

Ya got my vote! YUP Its a shame. Yes he carried a gun, but he didnt use it on anyone other then himself. In most places, it is legal to carry one nowadays anyways. A Bar, never is it legal, so I see the point there, but if he gets what they say hes going to get, there are guys out there doing a lot worse then that, getting way less. Usually the famous atheletes get lesser then they say, so I guess I shouldnt jump the gun(no pun intended) here. But either way, the Giants needed him, and I think were dumb for letting him go. Unless they have some other big name/Very Good WR in there mind, dumb!

They gotta shit or get off the pot. Replacing him will take time.

I guess if it frees up money, then I see it, but if his money is still tied up, then they should have just kept him. I dont know how it is gonna work in this case, so its hard to say for sure what I think.

There are two places in this country where you don't screw around with gun laws. Massachusetts and New York. Especially handguns. He did something stupid and very dangerous. It was illegal and he knew it. He should pay the price (in addition to his injured leg). We'll see where this legal mess ends up. He may never play another down again.

I guess there are morals clauses and what not in their contracts so the Giants may get outta the deal w/o owing him any cash. Also Plax's wife is an attourney but can't really defend him because she is his wife. It is long and complicated. I guess he needs ta get his off field shit straight, then worry about football.
