Default No sleep tonight

Well I finally decided it was time to retire to bed at 3:00am. At 3:20am all of the smoke alarms in the house went off for no apparent reason. Not the beep to indciate a low battery, but full blown alarm. I had to disconnect and remove the battery from the one that triggered the onset. If I plug it back in the alarm goes off again and sets off the others, too. Now I am paranoid and cannot sleep. Anyway, I came to DCZ to pass the time. Smoke alarms in the middle of the night will surely scare the heck out of you.

It's been my history that when they sound for no reason, it may be time for a new alarm. How old are they?

I remember that once happening to me. It was 8 years ago and I was out at a hotel staying in the same room as my brother (much older). When the alarm went off, I stupidly told him to turn it off.

Ken - I have been in this house 9 years and the alarm was here when I bought it. I agree that buying a new one sounds like the right thing to do. Thanks

Christina - I could not agree more

We used to get alot of calls for carbon monoxide detector activations, and when we took readings there were no abnormal results. That turned out to mean, the detector was shot. I would assume the same w/the smoke detector if it's that old. It wouldn't hurt to replace them all.

You've been in the house 9 years and I'm sure you have no idea how long before that they were in place, right? Most some alarms are good for 10 years before they become ineffective. Are they hard wired with battery backup or battery only? It sounds to me like they're hardwired because you indicated that they all went off. Here newer homes are required to have hardwired devices if they were built after 1997. You can check them by removing the device and looking at the date stamped on the bottom.

ToolTime17 - Correct, I have no idea how long they were there before I moved in and they are hard wired with battery backup.

Thank you everyone for the feedback, much appreciated.

wouldn't want your dicast collection to go up in flames

I am deathly afraid of fire. I'm so afraid of losing my posessions. Our house is really old and I have so many posessions. I would die.
